Classics: SG1 4:7 - Watergate

Overall Rating: 4.6

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Plot Synopsis:

A full summary of this week's RIVETING action may be found at the Stargate Wiki

The Skinny:

It's...alive!! The water is alive!! Sorry, but this episode is both boring and...well...kind of lame in the concept department. It's a shame, too...we'd have quite a streak of good episodes going here to start the 4th season and there a nice streak of high quality SG1 coming after this stinker, but there always seems to be at least a hand full of filler episodes in each season that are just incredibly boring...as though the writers got assigned a high concept piece that they weren't interested in doing and just phoned it in.

Hey, here's an idea...lets open up the gate to a planet full of non-specific energy readings, assume it's a power source, and collect a sample of this water for study...but the water's ALIVE and it kills us all! That would have been a good episode concept if the writer had SHOWN us the attack of the evil water...or if the mystery/suspense angle had been played up more. It didn't really go that way, though. The involvement of Russia in Stargate politics on Earth was a good idea too...and they'll make hay with that in later episodes, but for now, it does nothing to heighten the drama.

Writing: 3.0

Boring dialogue...boring plot...just plain old boring.

Acting: 4.7

Marina Sirtis (!) was on the guest star list...but she was a very poor choice for a Russian scientist...her accent was comically bad and she played the character very flatly. The regulars put in unremarkable performances all around.

Message: 6.0

As far as I can tell, the message would seem to be "don't screw around with a Stargate unless you know what you're doing." Or alternatively, "make sure something isn't alive before you kidnap it." Neither of which is all that revolutionary.
