Overall: 6.0
Once again, we have an episode that moves the plot forward but isn't especially good. Luckily, there will be fewer of these as the third season progresses.
Plot Synopsis:
The Lurker's Guide, as always, has a plot synopsis here.
The Skinny:
The Musante character doesn't work for me at all; she is both poorly written and poorly performed. I don't understand, for example, what her attempt to sexually seduce Sheridan adds to her role. As a matter of fact, I think the scene at the Fresh Air and the scene in Sheridan's quarters contradict each other. In the Fresh Air, Musante is the astute and self-aware fascist; in Sheridan's quarters, she's the socialite who's slept her way to the top. I don't think both personas can exist in the same person -- but perhaps I'm wrong.
Meanwhile, the search for the Sigma 957 First Ones - aka the Tiki Gods of Doom - leaves me feeling pretty indifferent even if I do discount the silly CGI. It is mildly amusing that Ivanova convinces them to help in the war against the Shadows by calling them chickens, but otherwise -- meh.
As written, the conflict between Zack and Garibaldi over Zack's involvement with the Nightwatch is good. I just wish we had stronger actors in those roles; Jeff Conaway in particular just leaves me cold.
I guess the only thing I really liked about this episode is G'Kar's small role. It's interesting to watch G'Kar deal with the frustration of not being accepted by the others as a trusted ally. Of course, that's something he brought upon himself.
Theoretically, important things happen here. We get confirmation that Morden and President Clark were directly involved in the assassination of President Santiago. We have begun to gather allies for the war ahead. Clark's government is preparing to launch a round of Stalinist purges. Despite all this, however, I usually skip this episode on re-watch.
Writing: 5.5
Unsubtle (and contradictory) characterization and uninspiring dialogue mar what should be a fairly momentous script.
Acting: 5.5
The acting is also a huge weakpoint. I'm even disappointed with Claudia Christian's work here.
Message: 7.0
If I were to produce a Babylon 5 remake, I'd probably make the creep of fascism on Earth far more subtle. I don't disagree that the human race is vulnerable to Stalinism, fascism, and other isms, but Straczynski really does like to beat us over the head with it.
