Overall Rating: 6.5
This one is pretty much standard fare as far as I'm concerned. I do enjoy Anna-Louise Plowman (Gardner/Osiris) and her working relationship with Michael Shanks...they have some chemistry that seems to work...but the sudden emergence of the Goa'uld Osiris only pays off if used to givve Daniel personal motivation to battle the Goa'uld...the show's writers never used that potential properly.
Plot Synopsis:
The Stargate Wiki has the summary.
The Skinny:
I do enjoy it when Stargate deviates from the "travel through the gate and see new civilization" formula and does something interesting on Earth, but this one develops a little slowly, and, apart from the scintillating chemistry between Daniel and Sarah, there's not a lot that should make us interested in the story. We are so far removed from the geeky Dr. Jackson that would have gotten deeply emotionally invested in his reputation amongst his colleagues and been seriously hurt by his continued rejection even after evidence surfaces that he was right that we don't really feel for him all that much as he struggles with his former associates, mistakenly believes Rayner is a Goa'uld, and finds out that his trusted ally is in fact the one possessed. Don't get me wrong...I still like Daniel, and enjoy rooting for his happiness, but...his stories do feel a little less resounding when he works so hard to suppress his geeky emotional outbursts these days and no longer carries the underdog with the heart of gold vibe.
On top of that, I'm not sure if I can really draw any kind of significant message from this one...other than perhaps that the Goa'uld are much better actors than we give them credit for if they can repeatedly fool us by playing into our emotional connections. And this story never really leads anywhere long term. Osiris eventually finds herself in league with Annubis until he is stopped and Sarah is freed in a later fifth season episode. But then...we never hear from Sarah again...that plot thread is simply dropped with no explanation.
Writing: 6.0
A tad slow...the dialogue is not all that interesting, and the plot is the foundation of a thread that ends up going nowhere - which would be fine if it was important in the here and now, and we never feel that it is.
Acting: 7.5
Michael Shanks and Plowman do well together, but Ben Bass (Rayner) is utterly horrid...I kept waiting for him to twirl his nonexistent mustache. :\
