Classics: SG1 6:3 - Descent

Overall Rating: 6.0

My biggest complaint regarding this show is that it all too quickly resolves the lingering mistrust between O'Neill and Jonas - leaving everyone as tightly bound as they were in the days of Daniel Jackson. I think that happened far too quickly for subsequent stories to be "earned" in the eyes of the viewers.

Plot Synopsis:

The details can be found here, courtesy of the Stargate Wiki.

The Skinny:

It's not that I want to see Jonas treated as an outcast and punished for his inaction during "Meridian"...I'd be fine with the members of SG-1 coming to appreciate that Jonas is a well-intentioned fellow and treating him compassionately. But this script feels very rushed when it comes to redeeming Jonas Quinn in the eyes of Colonel O'Neill in particular. I can even understand why Teal'c, who's spent more time with Jonas than the rest of the staff due to a feeling of common isolation (they're both aliens, after all), is the first to express a more meaningful friendship bound with him. But Jack took years to truly warm up to Daniel - I mean they had a mutual respect by the end of the movie, but the movie took place over more than a full season on Abydos and that mutual respect hardly qualifies as the deeper bond they developed in the series. In short - the cast is different now...the writers should be trying to make the show feel different too (not different in its' fundamental message or format, but the interpersonal dynamics should change or you're cheapening Daniel's character...and Jonas').

Other than that complaint, this episode is a distinctly average (and reasonably entertaining) adventure story involving a stalled Hatak and the restoration of Thor's soul to his body...ad some Ninja Jaffa (where did THAT concept come from?). Nothing stands out as either good or bad about the basic plot and it doesn't really do anything to advance the longer-running plots of the show. Leaving me feeling uninspired to spend a great deal of time dissecting it.

Writing: 5.0

An average script marred by a bad executive decision regarding Jonas' direct insertion into Daniel's shoes.

Acting: 7.0

Nothing was particularly wrong with any of the peformances...I actually think Coran Nemic is underrated by fans because he was trying to directly replace a beloved character...never a smart move, bigwigs!

Message: 6.0

Umm...I guess I could comment on Jonas learning to trust his teammates just as they learn to trust him...but...it all happens so fast, I can't even give the show credit for that.
